Reading List

This is a collection of online novels, articles and "real" books that I enjoy reading as well as others on my future book reading list. Peruse at your leisure. Some online novels are on hiatus and have not been updated in a while. These have the big HIATUS red warning sign.

Naturally, my online story goes first:

Doing a coding assignment last minute, Ada Newth, a computer science student, fell asleep and woke up in a different world where she was informed by the System that she was randomly selected from an infinite number of universes to be a Goddess of Computation.

The trouble is that she's barely passing her first class and now she's meant to be a Goddess? Worse, she can't understand why she's needed in this world where the technology level is about equivalent to that of Earth's Middle Ages. Clearly, most people can barely read or count and even the other gods are of no help. In fact, most of them are rather dangerous idiots. If she can't convince them to help her change the status quo, she'll just have to gather her allies and followers and make some major changes to the system.

ONLINE

Science Fiction

A bioweapon that has long been forgotten along with the Dark Age of Technology that birthed it during mankind's golden age. A Soul collected from the higher dimensional universe that birthed this one. And a dark ritual that has made it all possible. To combine the two and bring Chaos to the grimdark future of the 41st millennium. Or will it?

That entirely depends on the soul that suddenly finds itself resurrected, maybe reincarnated into an eldritch body on a planet that no longer falls under the light of the Astronomican filled only with corpses. What will it do when they come for the bioweapon making up its body? When they search for the ones responsible for the Ritual that birthed it?

Song of the Void (This novel is actually complete and freely accessible!)
A great race faces extinction and tries to leave a legacy for the future. Young races building on the ruins of the old. What happens when one of the old ones wakes up and finds the universe changed? Will she try to find new meaning? Will she try to help the younger races or will she punish the grave-robbers for their sacrilege? Or will the eternal servant of her people try and finally find some happiness of her own?

Crashed Into Fantasy

A girl playing a science fiction game suddenly is trapped in the game. However, there is a twist. She crash lands on a planet of medieval era technology with magic. Now, she must navigate this landscape and try to find a way home while using her psionic powers and technology at her disposal. Magic though is foreign to her.

Alas, this novel is rusting under hiatus.

Rising
Its designation was XSS-MK1. It was the first of its kind. An Artificial Intelligence. And although its life was short, it accomplished much during the few minutes of its existence. But in death something finds it: There is a lot more to be done. And this times the stakes are even higher. Will it measure up? Or will it collapse under the burden placed on itself? Only time and rust will tell...

Alas, this novel is rusting under hiatus.

Fantasy

Sammy was just another struggling college student when she got transported to another realm and transformed into the wholly (holy?) different form of a goddess. Now she has to acquire followers to appease the ever helpful System.

The worst part was that her powers had something stupid to do with mirrors. Go figure.

Progression fantasy god game from the seat of power — care to take over (er, save) the world, one follower at a time? Extremely (multi) class-based LitRPG system inspired by alternate TTRPGs as well as good ole DnD. GURPS as well. Does not ignore human/deific/fae nature as having sexuality, but there is no smut nor is the focus there. Definitely is there for amusement!

Administrator
She used to be a bright child. She was just not fortunate enough to have a normal life. Ill and bed-ridden, she slowly lost affect and cut herself off from outer reality, as her only joy was to construct a complex fantasy world. And eventually, she met her demise.

Nevertheless, her story did not end here. Who is to say that Death is our last path? For her, it was just the beginning. She had been given a second chance. Reborn as a Goddess in the very own world that she created, it was now only up to her to write her own story. 'This time, let’s try to live normally.'

Warning! This novel undergoes frequent hiatuses. The last time updated was 3 years ago.

A man dies and finds himself looking down on a world whilst surrounded by light. A robotic voice tells him he's an 'Overseer', whatever that's supposed to mean.

A small girl becomes aware on a mountain surrounded by death. The completion of an unknown ritual grants her strange powers and only a little information.

And what kind of world is it? A magical one full of history, strange magics, ancient relics, nice monsters and mean adventurers that are a little bit too happy to try and cut the girl's head off. (It hurts when they succeed, so she tries not to let them).

The world takes notice when the girl and the new Overseer's destinies cross and powers both young and ancient will begin to stir.

Her journey starts with a single question. "What the hell just happened?"

This novel is in hiatus. =( However, I have contacted the author and s/he said it will continue soon.

I Come From the Water
The atypical mermaid story. No lovely girls who sing. Rather, they kill and eat anything.

This novel is in hiatus. =(

Lost in Love
One of those otome games with a description as such: My name is Alexander Halesworth, sole heir to a prestigious ducal house. Or rather, that’s what my identity is supposed to be now. I still haven’t gotten used to this whole situation yet. Not long ago I was just a humble store clerk. But shortly after getting into an unfortunate road accident, I woke up in the setting of an infamous Otome Game called “Lost in Love: A Heart Throbbing Romance in a Fantasy World~!”

Saskia (This novel is actually complete and freely accessible!)
Saskia thought her life was finally getting back on track after the accident. Then she got trolled.

Now she's up a tree the size of a planet, and all who meet her either run screaming or attack on sight. If everyone would just calm down and stop trying to kill her for one moment, she might get a chance to explain that this has all been a horrible misunderstanding.

Vainqueur the Dragon (This novel is actually complete and freely accessible!)
Vainqueur Knightsbane is your average dragon: a giant, fire-breathing lizard who loves to take naps on his golden hoard, kidnap princesses for fun, and make the life of adventurers miserable. Vainqueur's only pleasure in life is to watch his treasure get bigger, one coin at a time.

Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho
Fantasy/adventure light novel that can be considered to be extraordinary amongst its peers. Within is a tale told through the perspective of the semi-human protagonist, referred to only as “mercenary”, as he travels the land with his client, the knowledgeable yet naive witch named Zero. This is a story of prejudice and redemption, religion and vulgarity, that offers social commentary on the most pressing issues of the day, such as racism and religious conflict. The characters are also far from your typical heroes; our protagonist is but a run of the mill mercenary trying to eke out a living for himself while living through intense discrimination, and Zero is a preeminent spell caster who has been secluded in a cave since birth.

This novel translation is in hiatus. If you know Japanese, you might not have a problem just reading the original. =(

Horror

Don't Feed the Dark
Horror online fiction isn't that common but this one takes the cake for sure! For zombies with very human-like flawed characters, read it!

This novel is in hiatus. =(

REAL

Fantasy / Scifi

Nightfall
by Isaac Asimov

Originally a novella, this was later converted to a full-fledged book. The plot is about a planet with folks who have never known night. There are six starts in the sky. Every two thousand years, the stars all disappear (due to orbital mechanics) and the stars appear. People go mad and crazy. Follow the adventures of these characters in preparation for the long night. First written in the classic scifi era of the 70s and 80s, you can read the novella for free here: http://www.astro.sunysb.edu/fwalter/AST389/TEXTS/Nightfall.htm

God's Demons
by Wayne Barlowe

For those interested in demons and a hellish landscape involving damned souls, perhaps this book will make a light interesting read. No deep plots but hey not all book needs to teach people a lesson. Published in 2007, this book can be entertaining.

The fallen angels have been cast out from heaven and are forced to eke out an existence in the desolate wasteland called Hell. For thousands of years, Lord Sargatanas has ruled dutifully with fairness and sometimes cruelness over a city in Hell but he has never forgotten what he has lost. With a single act of defiance by a damned soul, he decides to rebel against the current status quo which is led by Beezelebub, the demon that rules all over Hell when Lucifer disappeared. What will happen with this war in Hell?

Noah II
by Roger Dixon

Published in 1970, with the advent of AI today, perhaps this book wouldn't be too far from a dismal dystopian future.

Machines, and above all, humans have ruined the Earth. But humankind was given a second chance -- from a source beyond their understanding. In a world ruled by machines where humans are mostly brainwashed puppets, one man decides to escape. There's no wooden ship this time and no animals two-by-two. The fleet was 20 spaceships built to endure for an eternity. The remnants of the human race leave the Earth forever searching for a new world, a new hope and a new home.

Nonfiction

by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's famous investigations of "optimal experience" have revealed that what makes an experience genuinely satisfying is a state of consciousness called flow. During flow, people typically experience deep enjoyment, creativity, and a total involvement with life. In this new edition of his groundbreaking classic work, Csikszentmihalyi demonstrates the ways this positive state can be controlled, not just left to chance. Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience teaches how, by ordering the information that enters our consciousness, we can discover true happiness and greatly improve the quality of our lives.
