Clean Code: 5 Takeaways

 I haven't read this book Clean Code by Robert C. Martin but I heard it was good. I did read the synopsis here by this Medium author and I think I'll take his word for it. Here's a few things that I just copied and pasted from his article.*

Published in 2008, and over recent years, it has consistently ranked as one of the top five highest-selling books on Amazon. The author, affectionately known as “Uncle Bob,” was one of the original authors of the Agile Manifesto and has some serious credentials. The book has achieved an average rating of 4.4 on Goodreads from over 13,000 ratings. Suffice to say, it’s one of those books every programmer should read.

1. Programming is a craft.

But how do we go from simply writing code to crafting code?

According to Martin, the main tools we have at our disposal are continuous refactoring and test-driven development (TDD). These work together like two sides of a coin. Here are some definitions:

Refactoring is the process of restructuring existing computer code without changing its external behavior.

Test-driven development is a process where requirements are turned into specific test cases, then the code is added so the tests pass.

So, the process of crafting software might look something like this:

  1. Write failing tests that verify the required but unimplemented behaviour.
  2. Write some (potentially bad) code that works and makes those tests pass.
  3. Incrementally refactor the code, with the tests continuing to pass, making it more clean with each development iteration.

2. Keep it short!

According to Martin this means two things:

  • Function bodies should be short — hardly ever longer than 20 lines and mostly less than 10 lines
  • Functions should take as few arguments as possible, preferably none

Function brevity makes code easier to read. It also steers us towards a situation where functions do one thing — and do it well.

He makes a similar point about classes. With classes, he suggests using responsibilities as the measure of size rather than lines of code. The idea is a class should only be responsible for one thing. This is known as the single responsibility principle (SRP).

Keeping entities short is a divide-and-conquer strategy for making code cleaner. If we have a big file with lots of lengthy, complicated code, we can divide that file into modules, divide the modules into functions, and divide functions into subfunctions until the logic and intent are clear.

3. Make code self-documenting.

In the sections on comments, meaningful names, and formatting, Martin makes a strong case for code being self-documenting. An example of this is given as follows:

This gets refactored to

Note:

  • The comment is removed
  • The conditional logic is encapsulated into a method
  • Because a method is used and not a free-standing function, instance variables can be used, creating a zero-argument method call
  • The method is given a descriptive name, making its responsibility super clear

There's a full chapter on naming, which is essentially an elaboration on Tim Ottinger’s rules. These include:

  • Use intention-revealing names — e.g, int elapsedTimeInDays, not int days
  • Use pronounceable names — e.g., Customer, not DtaRcrd102
  • Avoid encodings — don’t use an m_ prefix for members and don’t use Hungarian notation
  • Pick one word per concept — don’t fetch, retrieve, get for the same concept

 4. Respect abstraction.

If we want to make sure our functions are only doing one thing, we need to make sure the statements within each function are all at the same level of abstraction.

Notes:

  • The render() function is now only responsible for constructing an hr tag
  • The low-level details of constructing the tag are now delegated to the HtmlTag module
  • Size formatting is abstracted into a separate function

5. Clean code is about principles and hard work.

Sociology: Popularity of a Person or Country Part 2

Remember the article on Sociology: Popularity of a Person or Country I posted about 8 years ago (specifically on December 23, 2012) on whether a Google image search for a name yields a country or a person? Well, I did it again with the same word "Leone" and the results show the skew in interest in popular perspective. Unfortunately, the country Sierra Leone is not even in the picture (pun intended) for the initial hits.

Here's what's seen:

Eight years ago, Sierra Leone led with 7 hits followed by Sunny Leone with 5 hits. I doubt that Sierra Leone became less popular; rather, with the explosive growth of popularity of Sunny Leone in India, a search for Leone inevitably reveals this Indian-Canadian actress and model.

Next up is doing a search for each of these five hits and seeing the number of results for now compared to 8 years ago. As can be seen, Sierra Leone still comes out on top with the number of results but Sunny Leone is cutting close.

Sunny Leone has increased in search results by over 5 times whereas Sierra Leone only increased by 1.5 times. Miriam Leone was not even on the list back in 2012. How can a country increase in its search results by 5 times? That seems highly unlikely unless it's a large nation such as India or China. It would have been interesting to see how many results those would yield.

There's not much description of the looks of the characters in the web novel but here's an image to spice your imagination who is a goddess of her own - Tessa Fowler.


Since last September or so, I have been writing the online novel Goddess of Computation. Though I stopped for a few months earlier this year, I have picked up at least a weekly update since August 2020. Check it out when you get the chance!


Synopsis
Doing a coding assignment last minute, Ada Newth, a computer science student, fell asleep and woke up in a different world where she was informed by the System that she was randomly selected from an infinite number of universes to be a Goddess of Computation.

The trouble is that she's barely passing her first class and now she's meant to be a Goddess? Worse, she can't understand why she's needed in this world where the technology level is about equivalent to that of Earth's Middle Ages. Clearly, most people can barely read or count and even the other gods are of no help. In fact, most of them are rather dangerous idiots. If she can't convince them to help her change the status quo, she'll just have to gather her allies and followers and make some major changes to the system.

Yuxiang shredded pork (Chinese: 魚香肉絲; pinyin: yúxiāng ròusī; sometimes translated as fish-flavored pork slices, or more vaguely as shredded pork with garlic sauce) is a common dish in Sichuan cuisine. Yuxiang is one of main traditional flavors in Sichuan.

Seriously, China has some dishes with some weird names. The dishes themselves aren't even that weird; it's just the names. Check out the following.

Ants Climbing a Tree


Ants climbing a tree (simplified Chinese: 蚂蚁上树; traditional Chinese: 螞蟻上樹; pinyin: Mǎyǐshàngshù) is a classic Sichuan dish in Chinese cuisine. The name of the dish in Chinese, Mayishangshu, has been translated as "ants climbing a tree", "ants on the tree", "ants creeping up a tree", "ants climbing a hill" or "ants climbing a log". It is so called because the dish has bits of ground meat clinging to noodles, evoking an image of ants walking on twigs. The dish consists of ground meat, such as pork, cooked in a sauce and poured over bean thread noodles. Other ingredients in the dish may include rice vinegar, soy sauce, vegetable oil, sesame oil, scallions, garlic, ginger, and chili paste.

Mechanical Concepts

Every so often, I get into these Wikipedia binges where I start looking up random things. A little while back, I got into reading on various on mechanical devices. Maybe one day I will build one of these.

Hoberman Sphere


A Hoberman sphere is an isokinetic structure patented by Chuck Hoberman that resembles a geodesic dome, but is capable of folding down to a fraction of its normal size by the scissor-like action of its joints. Colorful plastic versions have become popular as children's toys: several toy sizes exist, with the original design capable of expanding from 5.9 inches (15 cm) in diameter to 30 inches (76 cm).

A Hoberman sphere typically consists of six great circles corresponding to the edges of an icosidodecahedron. The Hoberman sphere can be unfolded by allowing certain members to spread apart. The operation of each joint is linked to all the others in a scissors mechanism like those used to mount pantograph mirrors, or how a folding chair operates. In larger models, this can be accomplished by feeding out a string or cable instead.


Kinematic Synthesis
Kinematic synthesis, also known as mechanism synthesis, determines the size and configuration of mechanisms that shape the flow of power through a mechanical system, or machine, to achieve a desired performance.

Hartenberg and Denavit describe kinematic synthesis as

...it is design, the creation of something new. Kinematically, it is the conversion of a motion idea into hardware.

The earliest machines were designed to amplify human and animal effort. Later, gear trains and linkage systems captured wind and flowing water to rotate millstones and pumps. Now machines use chemical and electric power to manufacture, transport, and process items of all types. Kinematic synthesis is the collection of techniques for designing those elements of these machines that achieve required output forces and movement for a given input.

Wenkel Engine

The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine using an eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion.

All parts of a rotary engine rotate in one direction. This is opposed to the common reciprocating piston engine, which has pistons instantly and rapidly changing direction 180 degrees. In contrast to the reciprocating piston designs, the Wankel engine delivers advantages of simplicity, smoothness, compactness, high revolutions per minute, and a high power-to-weight ratio.

Dance At Bougival

Dance at Bougival (French: La Danse à Bougival) is an 1883 work by Pierre-Auguste Renoir currently in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America.It has been described as "one of the museum's most beloved works".

The work depicts two of Renoir's friends, Suzanne Valadon and Paul Lhote. The setting is the French village of Bougival, about 15 km from the center of Paris. Many Impressionists including Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Berthe Morisot, and Renoir painted scenes there.

Tteok-bokki

Tteok-bokki (떡볶이; also spelled ddukbokki) or stir-fried rice cakes is a popular Korean food made from small-sized garae-tteok (long, white, cylinder-shaped rice cakes) called tteokmyeon (떡면; "rice cake noodles") or commonly tteok-bokki-tteok (떡볶이 떡; "tteok-bokki rice cakes").

Today, variations also include curry-tteok-bokki, cream sauce-tteok-bokki, jajang-tteok-bokki, seafood-tteok-bokki, galbi-tteok-bokki and so on. Tteok-bokki is commonly purchased and eaten at bunsikjip (snack bars) as well as pojangmacha (street stalls). There are also dedicated restaurants for tteok-bokki, where it is referred to as jeugseog tteok-bokki (impromptu tteok-bokki). It is also a popular home dish, as the rice cakes (garae-tteok) can be purchased in pre-packaged, semi-dehydrated form.

Women Scientists - Completely Underrated and Often Forgotten



Well-behaved women rarely make history. Perhaps that's because we're still teaching history as if we're living in the 1920s. The only woman scientist most people can name from their head is probably just Marie Curie. Yet, there are numerous scientists. Just to give you an idea, the first chemist in the world was a perfume maker in ancient Babylon (1200 BCE) who was a woman. Her name was Tapputi. She was also an overseer at the Royal Palace and worked with another woman researcher whose name unfortunately has been lost.

Women scientists are unfortunately relegated to the bottom heap of known scientists. Here are a couple of scientists who made major contributions and yet no one knows about them. By the way, several of these are not scientists. Can you find who they are?

Judith Love Cohen


Judith Love Cohen (August 16, 1933 – July 25, 2016) was an American aerospace engineer. Cohen worked as an electrical engineer on the Minuteman missile, the science ground station for the Hubble Space Telescope, the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, and the Apollo Space Program. After her retirement as an engineer, she founded a children's multimedia publishing company, eventually publishing more than 20 titles before her death in 2016. Cohen was the mother of computer scientist and engineer Neil Siegel and actor Jack Black.

Cohen was born into a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Sarah Cohen (née Roisman) and Morris Bernard Cohen. By fifth grade, her classmates were paying her to do their math homework. She was often the only girl in her math classes, and decided she wanted to become a math teacher. By age 19, she was both studying engineering in college, and dancing ballet in the Metropolitan Opera Ballet company in New York.

Recipe: Eggplant Pakora

Eggplant Pakora Recipe

Pakoras are Indian fritters, made of vegetables (cauliflower, potato, spinach, onion, eggplant, plantain, chili pepper, etc.), paneer, bread or meat, dipped into a spicy gram flour. They are then battered and deep fried.

1. In a big bowl, mix besan / gram flour, rice flour, green chili, cilantro leaves, turmeric powder, red chili powder, a pinch of asafoetida and salt.

2. Add 1 cup water and whisk to a smooth medium consistency without lumps.

3. Wash and slice eggplant / baingain / brinjals. Dip them in the batter.

4. Heat oil in frying pan on medium heat. Gently place eggplant slices and fry until crispy and golden brown on both sides.

5. Remove pakoras and place on paper towel to remove excess oil.

6. Serve hot or warm with chutney or tomato ketchup.

Pupils: Windows to the Soul

People often call eyes the windows to the soul. But what exactly do we see when we gaze into the eyes of another person? In fact, the eyes do provide lots of information about another person’s emotional state.

We can tell a true (or Duchenne) smile from a fake by looking at a person's eyes. The mouth shape of a smile is easy to fake—we do it all the time out of politeness. But the eyes are the giveaway: When we’re truly happy, we not only smile but also crinkle the corners of our eyes in a “crow’s feet” pattern. But when people fake a smile, they usually forget about their eyes.

If the eye is the window, the pupil is the opening to the eye. Psychologists Sebastiaan Mathôt and Stefan Van der Stigchel argue that there’s a lot more to the pupillary light response than, well, meets the eye. They claim that the size of the pupils tells us a lot about the emotions and intentions of their owners. According to the researchers, the pupillary light response isn’t just a mechanical reaction to ambient light. Rather, as we shift our gaze from one spot to another, our pupils adjust their size in advance to the amount of light we expect to encounter at the new location. Because the pupillary light response is relatively slow—about a quarter of a second—anticipating the amount of light at the new location improves vision once our gaze gets there.

The pupillary light response is only one reason why the pupils change size. They also dilate when we’re aroused. This occurs whenever we detect a threat or an opportunity in our environment. Meet an attractive person at a party, and what happens to your body? Your heart and breathing rates increase, you begin to sweat—and your pupils dilate. Psychologists consider pupil dilation to be an honest cue to sexual or social interest. That’s because pupil size isn’t under your voluntary control. Let’s say you’re trying to fake interest as your coworker recounts every play in his weekend golf game. You can force a smile. You might even remember to crinkle the corners of your eyes, to make that smile look real. But your tiny pupils will reveal your lack of interest. Thus, the eyes may be the windows to the soul, but the pupils tell a lot about what’s going on in the mind of another person.

Interactive Fiction for Fun





Stealing Wikipedia's definition, Interactive fiction, often abbreviated IF, is software simulating environments in which players use text commands to control characters and influence the environment. Works in this form can be understood as literary narratives, either in the form of interactive narratives or interactive narrations.

IF happens to be a gem of a genre for someone like me who loved to read choose-your-own-adventure novels when I was a kid. To have books with destinies decided not just by the author but by the reader was astounding to me. Besides, I frequently look at my own life this way. What if I chose to go to the park instead of just staying in that day? What if I decided to kiss the girl on the date instead of not? What if I decided to cook curry instead of fish? The most trivial choices can lead to momentous results.

Gigs During the Era of COVID-19



I was recently asked by a friend to give her some online gigs for extra income. She has recently being laid off since her company could not sustain their current workforce with the coronavirus wrecking havoc on the usual economic wheel. Finding a job takes time and in the meantime, she has to eat! Unemployment money only goes so far and that process takes some time to approve as well.
