[Astronomy] Superhabitable Worlds
Introduction
And when it comes to Earth, life has thrived, finding its way into every possible ecological niche, adapting itself through evolution to handle bitter cold, intense heat, the intense pressures at the bottom of the oceans, even cities, living right next to human beings. But could Earth be better? Could there be planets which are super habitable?In a 2016 paper called Superhabitable Worlds accepted by the journal Astrobiology, two physics professors, Rene Heller and John Armstrong, run through the conditions that might make the most habitable possible planet. They propose that stars with less mass than the Sun, classified as K stars, are probably the best candidates for diversity since they’re long-lived and relatively stable. A K-type star will have a lifetime of 20-70 billion years without those pesky red dwarf megaflares.
You would want other planets in the star system, capable of redirecting asteroids and comets with their gravity to deliver water and other chemicals needed for life. Thanks for that, Jupiter.
And ideally, you want multiple habitable planets in the same system, capable of sending life back and forth. A process known as panspermia.

Research: Proposed Aerospace Papers
Predicting the Fate of Humanity for the Next Century
Much has been said about the Fermi paradox, the paradox on why if there’s supposed to be intelligent civilizations out there, we humans have not observed any sign of life. One depressing but possibly true answer to this paradox is that almost all intelligent civilizations eventually discover weapons of mass destruction and end up destroying themselves before expanding via spaceflight. In Michio Kaku’s book Hyperspace a while ago, the physicist made the statement that the next 150 years will be a pivotal stage of whether humanity will expand into the stars or revert itself to the stone age or become extinct. In this paper, a prediction following the spirit of Drake equation is proposed. This equation is called the Shen equation, i.e. Global Calamity Equation, and it predicts the probability that human civilization will terminate within a given amount of time:
P(civilization termination) = P(Nuclear War)*P(Global Epidemic)*P(Asteroid Impact)*P(Ecological Collapse)
The probability for each calamity is based on best estimates from literary reviews in their respective fields.
Modeling Galactic Civilization Expansion and Encounters
Though alien life has not yet been confirmed, it is interesting to speculate on the state of galactic affairs in the universe. How has galactic civilization evolved over the eons? Does contact between different civilizations necessitate growth or decay? If human civilization provides any indication, contact between human civilizations has seen the imminent collapse of less technologically advanced civilizations when confronting more advanced civilizations. However, this has not always been the case and sometimes both civilizations benefit.
In this model, the galaxy is modeled as a distribution of possibly habitable systems on a three-dimensional grid following the best estimates of recent exo-solar planet discoveries. With the passage of the first time step, i.e. a millennium, each galactic civilization expands by ten light years from its home star system. With the passage of the second time step, i.e. a millennium again, each galactic civilization expands by one hundred light years (to take into account technology advancement). This exponential rise continues indefinitely. Each star system encountered is settled thus unless already settled by another galactic civilization. Upon civilization encounter, a random number is generated which decides whether the star system changes hands between civilizations, remains the same, or is annihilated. The entire simulation is run for 1000 time steps or until the galaxy is thoroughly colonized.
On Piezoelectric Power Generation from Space Debris
With the inevitable rise of space debris in the near future, protection from hypervelocity impacts has become an important issue for any spacecraft launched. Given the high kinetic energy yield of such impacts, an idea is proposed to capture such kinetic energy through piezoelectric materials incorporated into current Whipple Shield designs. Capturing such energy can be used to power components such as onboard batteries. A model and design of such a space power shield is proposed here based on experimental and theoretical models from NASA’s ORDEM2K.

I haven't regularly stargazed in a while and I shamefully admit that I only got 15 constellations: Orion, Auriga, Taurus, Canis Minor, Gemini, Perseus, Pegasus, Cygnus, Leo, Delphinus, Pisces, Cassiopeia, Ursa Minor, Ursa Major, and Draco. Given 8 minutes, I naturally cheated and managed to get most of the rest from looking up my star chart. However, I still missed a few. See screenshot:

[AERO] Commercializing Space Generates More Jobs!
Well, that's true according to a recent study conducted by The Tauri Group, a premiere space consulting firm. You might want to check out the link here:

Found this study through the Commercial Spaceflight Federation by the way. They're an industry association of various companies and organizations actively involved in commercializing space. As far as I'm concerned, more focus and government support for commercial space companies is the right track to go. I thought of writing an article on why it was a good thing that Constellation was canceled but frankly some people just write much better than me on this topic.
The latest Aerospace America issue (April 2010) had a very insightful and concise article written by Marco Caceres from the Teal Group with viewpoints that I wholeheartedly agree with. You might want to take a look at pages 20-21, 24-25 of the latest issue if you haven't done so already. The article is entitled "A Boost for Commercial Human Spaceflight" and it's a short read. To sum it up and to take directly from what Marco wrote,
"The cancellation of the VSE [Vision for Space Exploration] is a pragmatic decision by the Obama administration. There is just not enough money in the US budget to pay for a space transportation and exploration initiative in which the tangible benefits to the nation are not clear...NASA will help fund efforts by companies like SpaceX and OSC to develop human-rated space vehicles that will eventually be able to transport astronauts. These vehicles can, in turn, be adapted and offered to spur the development of new commercial markets such as space tourism. This will stimulate private capital investment in these types of space transportation programs, and before you know it you will have a growing and vibrant commercial human spaceflight industry."
I find it interesting that two separate aerospace consulting firms have reached the same conclusion, namely that space commercialization is good. I'm wondering if there's any aerospace consulting firm out there who actually thinks shifting emphasis from the Constellation to private space companies is a bad thing.
