Food - Yuxiang Shredded Pork (鱼香肉丝)



A signature dish of Sichuan cuisine, shredded pork with garlic sauce delivers a sophisticated and addictive taste: tangy, spicy, sweet & sour. 
Yuxiang shredded pork (Chinese: 魚香肉絲; pinyin: yúxiāng ròusī; sometimes translated as fish-flavored pork slices, or more vaguely as shredded pork with garlic sauce) is a common dish in Sichuan cuisine. Yuxiang is one of main traditional flavors in Sichuan.

Seriously, China has some dishes with some weird names. The dishes themselves aren't even that weird; it's just the names. Check out the following.

Ants Climbing a Tree


Ants climbing a tree (simplified Chinese: 蚂蚁上树; traditional Chinese: 螞蟻上樹; pinyin: Mǎyǐshàngshù) is a classic Sichuan dish in Chinese cuisine. The name of the dish in Chinese, Mayishangshu, has been translated as "ants climbing a tree", "ants on the tree", "ants creeping up a tree", "ants climbing a hill" or "ants climbing a log". It is so called because the dish has bits of ground meat clinging to noodles, evoking an image of ants walking on twigs. The dish consists of ground meat, such as pork, cooked in a sauce and poured over bean thread noodles. Other ingredients in the dish may include rice vinegar, soy sauce, vegetable oil, sesame oil, scallions, garlic, ginger, and chili paste.

Math Poetry



One day, I'll add some of my own math poetry here. For now, take a look at a few that others have written.

Outlier

The slick pen glides across paper
precisely scraping the ruler’s edge
marking a line beside many lonesome dots
a line of best fit as snug as a sweater.
The slope is a mere fraction, but the line it fabricated would stretch on,
encompassing an infinite amount of graph paper.
As the line traveled, it would pass by many data points
and the wispy voices of the outliers would be heard on the wind
calling to the line from worlds away, asking it to contort
to come and gather the lonely dots, and hold them shaking in its tepid arms
but the line never does.
Instead, it continues on without a sideways glance
forever the same slope
forever the same straight line.

The Number Won

Hatred of numbers, a cardinal sin,
Merely encumbers, hides beauty within
Mathematics. In abelian groups, numbers commute,
Their supremacy and distance from zero absolute.
So hear me out, for I’m the mathematical exhorter,

From noise find the signal, elucidate nice behavior.
Discover zeta’s zeroes, be number theory’s savior.
Appreciate numbers’ divine perpetuity,
Perceiving their secrets with mathy acuity.
In logic, truth, and in algebra, Lie,
In numbers, gold, the irrational phi.
Six is perfect, pi transcendental,
The monstrous moonshine of McKay monumental.
In our physical world, such numbers abound,
Bastions of constancy making reasoning sound.
Since math fields possess unity and division,

It’s the numeral lens that ensures us precision.

Mechanical Concepts

Every so often, I get into these Wikipedia binges where I start looking up random things. A little while back, I got into reading on various on mechanical devices. Maybe one day I will build one of these.

Hoberman Sphere


A Hoberman sphere is an isokinetic structure patented by Chuck Hoberman that resembles a geodesic dome, but is capable of folding down to a fraction of its normal size by the scissor-like action of its joints. Colorful plastic versions have become popular as children's toys: several toy sizes exist, with the original design capable of expanding from 5.9 inches (15 cm) in diameter to 30 inches (76 cm).

A Hoberman sphere typically consists of six great circles corresponding to the edges of an icosidodecahedron. The Hoberman sphere can be unfolded by allowing certain members to spread apart. The operation of each joint is linked to all the others in a scissors mechanism like those used to mount pantograph mirrors, or how a folding chair operates. In larger models, this can be accomplished by feeding out a string or cable instead.


Kinematic Synthesis
Kinematic synthesis, also known as mechanism synthesis, determines the size and configuration of mechanisms that shape the flow of power through a mechanical system, or machine, to achieve a desired performance.

Hartenberg and Denavit describe kinematic synthesis as

...it is design, the creation of something new. Kinematically, it is the conversion of a motion idea into hardware.

The earliest machines were designed to amplify human and animal effort. Later, gear trains and linkage systems captured wind and flowing water to rotate millstones and pumps. Now machines use chemical and electric power to manufacture, transport, and process items of all types. Kinematic synthesis is the collection of techniques for designing those elements of these machines that achieve required output forces and movement for a given input.

Wenkel Engine

The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine using an eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion.

All parts of a rotary engine rotate in one direction. This is opposed to the common reciprocating piston engine, which has pistons instantly and rapidly changing direction 180 degrees. In contrast to the reciprocating piston designs, the Wankel engine delivers advantages of simplicity, smoothness, compactness, high revolutions per minute, and a high power-to-weight ratio.
