Chinese Fruits and Vegetables

My ma sometimes tells me about herbs and I have no idea how to translate them into English typically. This is to provide a quick guide in case I am asked again in the future.

Myrica rubra

Also called yangmei, (Chinese: 杨梅; pinyin: yángméi; Cantonese: yeung4 mui4; Shanghainese: [ɦiɐ̃².mɛ⁴]), yamamomo (Japanese: ヤマモモ) Chinese bayberry or Chinese strawberry and often mistranslated from Chinese as arbutus. It is a subtropical tree grown for its fruit.

Brassica juncea

Commonly called Chinese mustard, Indian mustard, leaf mustard, vegetable mustard, it is a species of mustard plant. In Chinese it is called 芥菜 (jiècài). One variation of it is called snow mustard (雪里红).

Cooking - Desserts

I have a sweet tooth but I am not very well-acquainted with the names of things. Here I keep track of all the delicious sweets out there in a list that I can refer to. This is delicious research. Now someone has to make all of it for me or I have to go places to try them all!

Boston Cream doughnut

The Boston cream (pie) doughnut or donut is a round, solid, yeast-risen doughnut with chocolate frosting and a custard filling, resulting in a doughnut reminiscent of a miniature Boston cream pie.

The doughnut was made out of inspiration from the Boston cream pie which was, in turn, created by chef M. Sanzian at Boston's Parker House Hotel in 1856. The cake consists of vanilla-flavored custard sandwiched between two-layers of sponge cake and topped with chocolate glaze and has been popular in Massachusetts since its creation. The doughnut adaptation of the pie is popular not only in Massachusetts but throughout the United States and Canada.

General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT) Introduction

GMAT

Some links for General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT) for easy access. GMAT is a free tool provided by NASA for engineers to design trajectories and perform orbit determination. This page presents a general overview of GMAT as well as some lessons learned for my own benefit.

The most fundamental capability of GMAT is to propagate, or simulate the orbital motion of, spacecraft. The ability to propagate spacecraft is used in nearly every practical aspect of space mission analysis, from simple orbital predictions (e.g. When will the International Space Station be over my house?) to complex analyses that determine the thruster firing sequence required to send a spacecraft to the Moon or Mars.

Some basic understanding of orbital mechanics will be VERY HELPFUL. Please consult an astrodynamics book to build a foundation. GMAT is not a replacement for actually having this aerospace knowledge.

The full tutorial starts at Chapter 5 on the GMAT page. Assuming you're using the 2020 version, you can find the link as such after you install the software: http://gmat.sourceforge.net/docs/R2020a/html/Tutorials.html

Map Tie Errors

Map Tie Errors

Introduction

Localizing surface features relies on understanding offset between different references frames, i.e. map tie error. For instance, there is an offset between the Mars inertial and cartographic reference frames.

Math: Square Roots with Babylonian Method

Graph depicting how to do square root of 20 with Babylonian method.

Everyone knows how to add, subtract, multiply and divide with pencil and paper; but do you know how to find square roots without a calculator? (Incidentally, I highly recommend reading The Feeling of Power by Isaac Asimov, a short story about a future in which humans are so reliant on computers that they have forgotten how to do arithmetic.)

Recommendation - Formicea

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/47590/formicea

The swarm.
A unitary force of countless entities.
Nightmarish creatures from the darkest depths.
All working towards a greater purpose.
Simply fulfilling their role in a complex system.
Abducted from the world I know I am now forced to become a part of this.
Forced to help these horrors to increase their power.
However, they are not mindless killers.
There might be a way for me.
I could influence them from the inside.
To prevent that anyone has to die.
To protect the ones I love.
Maybe I can adjust.

If not for the eggs.

ChoiceScript Stories

Sitting quarantined in Fiji, what else is there to do but check out some videogames, especially my favorite kinds of interactive fiction. I discovered that there is a coding language called ChoiceScript which can be used to code in particular these multiple choice games. I discovered this through playing a number of games made by the company Choice of Games.

I discovered there is a site of free amateur written games coded with ChoiceScript. When I get back and assuming time permitting, I would love to code up one. Here are a few examples:

Recommendation - Only Villains Do That

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/40182/only-villains-do-that

Summary

While waiting on an Akihabara train platform one day, ordinary high schooler Yoshi Shinonome was suddenly plucked from his normal life in Japan and whisked away by a beautiful goddess to Ephemera, a world of magic and adventure, to serve as her Hero and drive back the evil Dark Lord.

This is not his story.

Standing nearby at the moment Yoshi was isekai'd was a man named Seiji - a rude, cranky, misanthropic musician who was not at all pleased to find himself also snatched up and transported to Ephemera by the goddess's wicked sister, Virya.  According to this self-proclaimed Goddess of Evil, the whole fantasy adventure thing was a game she and her sister played to stave off the boredom of immortality, and since the good goddess, Sanora, had picked her Hero...well, Virya needed a Dark Lord.

A grown man with his own career and ambitions, Seiji has no interest in playing.  Unfortunately for him, the call to adventure was not a request.  Now, he must conquer Ephemera and defeat the Hero...or Virya promises to make him beg for the release of death before granting it.  Playing along for his own survival, Seiji nonetheless is under no illusions who his true enemy is, and it's not the naive young would-be Hero from his own world.

Placed in an impossible position, Seiji must make enough progress toward world domination to keep his sadistic patron goddess off his back, but not so much that he can't strike an accord with the forces of Good and convince the Hero Yoshi that it's the goddesses who are their mutual enemy.  Forced to embrace Evil without being too evil, Seiji walks the razor's edge, building his forces and biding his time till he can get revenge on the goddesses and be free of them, his only certainty that he will not be getting out of this with his hands clean.

A Dark Lord's gotta do what a Dark Lord's gotta do.

Invention Idea: Auto-Rotating Pot

Burning flame captured several days ago.

While observing a pot of boiling cream of wheat, I had to keep stirring it to cook it evenly. The pot slowly started spinning on the countertop. I thought to myself: How about a pot that you can put on a stove which automatically rotates clockwise or counterclockwise based on internal sensors that determine which part of it is the least cooked? In other words, it tries to maintain constant temperature for each portion of the food.

Invention Idea: Self-conforming cup lids

Self-conforming cup lids. Putting on plastic lids on top of paper cups sometimes is difficult when the paper cups deform. Can we have a material (not plastic) that conform to the shape of the top of a paper cup even if it deforms a little bit?

Questions of Curiosity

Sometimes, I wake up with curious questions. I am not Googling the answers yet until I think about it myself and hypothesize explanations. Here are some:

1. Why does water left overnight taste flat in the morning? However, this doesn't happen with spring water.

2. Why is coffee made at a hotter temperature than tea?

3. What is a way for colorblind people to tell traffic lights apart? Why can't we change the colors of traffic lights?

4. How many books can an average bookshelf hold?

5. How many different ways are there to make light?
